Engineered Handling an  Design  Largest Pre-Engineered Office

Statesville’s Mack Molding, a custom injection plastics molding company, bought a 8,000 square foot, two-story pre-engineered office.  This is the largest office that the St. Louis-based manufacturer of modular buildings, Starrco has sold in the Southeast. The installation also included a 520 square foot, single-story, load-bearing shipping office.

Plant Manager, Joe Carinci, says they are very satisfied with the Starrco product and the installation process.

Features and Benefits

Ø      $20 per square foot savings over conventional stick building.

Ø      Five weeks from order placement to installation completion.

Ø      Depreciation accelerated over 7.5 years instead of 39 years.

The building also included a break room, conference rooms, quality control lab, computer room and men’s and women’s bathrooms with showers. Engineered Handling supplied the office furniture including cubicle partitions, lateral files, desks and chairs, as well as bathroom fixtures and lockers.

Importer Adds Storage Capacity

Blue Ridge Designs in Deep Gap, NC, importer of decorative accessories and giftware, added to their Unarco rack storage capacity.  The company increased their carton flow system by 139%, adding 2,400 pick locations, and increased their selective rack capacity by 40% by adding 6,450 pallet positions.

Blue Ridge Designs President Steve Hoover, inventor of the dancing Santa, started the business in his garage selling to specialty and department stores.  The company now offers over 2,000 items and currently has over 250,000 square feet of warehouse space.  All these spaces are equipped with state of the art material handling systems from Very Narrow Aisle pallet rack systems to high volume carton flow systems serviced by rail guided orderpickers.

Michael Woodruff of Blue Ridge Designs says that the rack is handling their present needs and that they may need more in the future.  Woodruff added, “I was very pleased with the installation and  the turn around,” says Woodruff .

Prepare For The Good Times

The bear market that has stalked us most of this year cranked into high gear after the evil events of September 11, 2001.  Many market watchers that followed the bumpy market of 2001 had been looking for a day of capitulation, where stocks would suffer a precipitous one-day decline.  Not surprisingly that day came September 17, the first day of trading after the terrorist attacks. The Dow fell 7% - not unexpected and not necessarily a calamitous economic event.

The retrenchment in the decade long surge of economic growth is clearly here which begs the question, “How will your company cope with the present slowdown and prepare for the recovery?”  One material handling industry trade journal editor warns against cutting back too much on capital spending,  “Managing solely for the downturn, without anticipating the recovery, could make it difficult to partake of the bounty when the economic season turns again.”

Engineered Handling designs and sells systems which are intended to save the customer money.  For example, incorporating conveyors with carton flow rack systems in a pick module increases efficiency, converting pallet racking from conventional to narrow aisle layout increases storage capacity without having to add expensive square footage to the warehouse, and constructing pre-engineered office systems not only is less expensive than conventional stick building, but can be depreciated over seven years instead of thirty.

Market leaders will continue to look for ways to improve their processes because falling behind when the market is down may keep you down when the market returns. Engineered Handling can help find ways to make your material handling processes more efficient reduce costs and position your company for a prosperous future.
